For thousands of years Jesus has been called the “son of man,” the “son of Mary,” the “son of David,” and most frequently the “son of God.”  Probably the most well known verses that call him the son of God can be found in the New Testament book of John. And of those verses probably the most recognizable one is: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 – King James Version As I meditated one morning it came to me that perhaps this verse is simply a misreading or misunderstanding of the words interpreted as “only begotten son”. Many earlier teachings from the Bible identify “sons of God”. As I studied the Quran and tried to picture God’s overall plan dealing with humanity, an idea came to me of a very bright jewel falling to earth. The glow of this gem captivates everyone who is able to "see it" for a period of time. Their neglect allows it to be gradually covered with the dust of this world until the original jewel is eventually understood to be nothing more than a foundation for this dust. And the longer a particular gem remains on earth, the more dust it is likely to collect. In my mind this is what happens to the true WORD of GOD when placed in the hands of humanity. I look first to Hinduism as an example which some authorities claim to be the oldest surviving religious system in the world. SPECIFIC RELEVANCE As in other research, if we can find an authenticated outside source we have a good yardstick against which to measure the other information we have about Jesus Christ and Christian doctrine. As demonstrated by the number of quotes in previous chapters, the Quran speaks a great deal about Jesus and about specific Christian doctrines. Once we are convinced that the Quran is indeed an intact divine revelation we have an invaluable tool in our research. Thus, when the mathematically coded statements of the Quran say, for example, that “Jesus created live birds from clay” (Quran 3:49 and 5:110), this becomes a proven statement by virtue of its mathematically authenticated composition. WAS HE THE SON? All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. [Romans 8:14] Jesus was the son. But whose son? He has been called the Son of Man, the Son of God, the Son of Mary, and the Son of David. Whose son was he? And what does that mean for us? SON OF MAN Throughout the Gospels, Jesus almost always calls himself the ‘Son of Man.’ It is the most frequently used title for him. In all cases but one it is used by Jesus to describe himself. Since he was born of a virgin, without any contribution from a man, this name which he used for himself, stresses his human nature. It stresses the fact that he was of human descent, not a descendant of God. If this were not true, the term ‘Son of Woman’ would have been much more appropriate. Vincent Taylor points out that in Jewish scripture and tradition the term ‘son of man’ was used as a synonym for ‘man’ (THE NAMES OF JESUS, St. Martin’s Press, 1953, pp. 325, 330).
