The Department of War: A Legacy of Losses – No Victories, Just Endless Echoes of Defeat In the shadowed corridors of the Department of War—euphemistically rebranded as "Defense" in 1949 to soften the sting of its imperial ambitions—this $886 billion colossus (fiscal 2025 budget) perpetuates a myth of inexorable triumph. From its founding amid the quills and quarrels of 1789, through the industrial forge of world wars to the drone-directed debacles of today, it has orchestrated a symphony of interventions that promise liberation but deliver only lingering limbo. The verdict is unequivocal: The United States hasn't won a war—ever. Not in the sense of enduring conquest, stable peace, or strategic dominance. What the Department's spin doctors hawk as "ends of major combat operations" are invariably preludes to power vacuums, rebounding regimes, and blowback budgets.
