World Blog by humble servant.Market Talk. If the Dow dropped 22% like it did in 1987, it would mean a loss of more than 5,700 points today The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 22.6 percent on Oct. 19, 1987, also known as "Black Monday," which amounted to 507.99 points at the time. A 22.6 percent plunge on the 30-stock Dow today would amount to a 5,735.76-point loss. For context, the biggest one-day point loss on the Dow took place on Feb. 5, when it closed down 1,175.21 points.

Picture taken October 19, 1987 shows a trader holding his head on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange when the Dow Jones dropped over 500 points, the largest decline in modern time, as panic selling swept Wall Street. Friday marked the 31st anniversary of "Black Monday," by far the worst day ever in the U.S. stock market. On that day — Oct. 19, 1987 — the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 22.6 percent, or 507.99 points at the time. If that kind of plunge were to happen today, the point loss would be far worse. A 22.6 percent plunge on the 30-stock Dow today would amount to a 5,735.76-point loss. For context, the biggest one-day point loss on the Dow took place on Feb. 5, when it closed down 1,175.21 points. But that was less than 5 percent. World Blog by humble servant.Russian space boss ‘temporarily’ taken off sanction list so he can visit US – NASA chief

NASA managed to convince the White House to ‘temporarily’ lift the travel ban imposed on Russian space chief Dmitry Rogozin so he could pay a visit to the US, the head of NASA said on Friday. NASA “succeeded” in temporarily “removing” the head of the Russian national space agency ‘Roscosmos’ from the sanctions list, Jim Bridenstine told TASS news agency. He explained that this was done so that the Russian official could travel to the US and “meet with NASA representatives and several of our contractors.” The US space agency wants to secure “strong working relations” with Russia as it will benefit both nations, Bridenstine said. “We wish to uphold such relations and will do everything we need to do that.” Bridenstine and Rogozin met earlier this month in Moscow where the NASA chief arrived to discuss joint space launches. The two later spent some time with the crew from Expedition 57, which successively conducted an emergency landing in Kazakhstan on October 11. Jim Bridenst...

New laws banning some 200 migrant children, living in a conservative Italian city, from accessing school meals or buses if their parents fail to provide appropriate documents have been blasted as "unfair" by locals, RT reports. The northern city of Lodi earlier this week made national and international headlines after its government controversially announced it will require foreigners to provide documents detailing their financial status so they can carry on accessing subsidies. Failure to provide such documentation, which can be difficult for migrants to get hold of from their country of origin, would result in their children losing their right to state benefits, including school buses and free meals. Amid reports of kids being forced to eat at home, cut off by the rest of their classmates, RT took to the streets of the town and talked to both migrants and locals to see what they had to say. A Muslim woman said she struggles to find the words to explain to her son w...

World Blog by humble servant. An unprecedented volume of Iranian crude oil is set to arrive at China’s northeast port of Dalian this month and in early November before US sanctions on Iran take effect. More than 20 million barrels of oil have been shipped to Dalian by the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), Reuters reports, citing an unnamed Iranian shipping source. “As our leaders have said, it will be impossible to stop Iran from selling its oil,” the source said, adding: “We have various ways of selling our oil and when the tankers reach Dalian, we will decide whether to sell it to other buyers or to China.” Read more © Global Look Press / Christian OhdeIran turns to new oil importers in the face of US sanctions – top official Dalian typically receives between one million and three million barrels of Iranian oil each month, according to statistics. The port has some of the biggest refineries and commercial oil storage facilities in China. OPEC’s third-largest producer, Iran is finding fewer takers for its crude ahead of the sanctions on its oil exports that will take effect on November 4. READ MORE: India to continue buying Iranian crude despite US sanctions threat The Islamic Republic has previously stored oil at Dalian during the last round of sanctions in 2014. The oil was later sold to buyers in South Korea and India. Earlier this week, Iran’s First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri said the country is ready to counter US sanctions and has already found new partners to buy its oil. Exports of Iranian crude oil have been in jeopardy since the White House announced that it is re-imposing unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic. In May, US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and a broad alliance of world powers. Washington has also threatened secondary sanctions on any countries or companies that conduct transactions with Iran.

Russia is currently in talks with US energy major ExxonMobil over new oil and gas projects as Washington considers new sanctions against the country, unnamed sources in the Russian government told Bloomberg. The negotiations are reportedly aimed at expanding contracts on existing projects between Russia’s state-run energy giant Rosneft and one of the biggest US oil and gas corporations, the source said.
