US President Donald Trump has suggested that American ownership of Ukraine’s power plants could be the key to safeguarding the country’s energy infrastructure, according to a White House statement. The proposal was raised during a phone call with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Wednesday, which Trump described as “very good.”
In the call, Trump emphasized that the US could leverage its expertise in electricity and utilities to manage Ukraine’s electrical supply and nuclear power plants. “American ownership of those plants would be the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure,” read a statement from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, released shortly after the discussion.
The conversation follows Trump’s recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he proposed a mutual halt to long-range strikes on energy infrastructure by Russia and Ukraine. Putin endorsed the idea and ordered an immediate cessation of such attacks, with the Russian military reporting it intercepted seven Ukrainian drones targeting energy facilities shortly after. Zelensky has also expressed support for the initiative, though he raised questions about its implementation and suggested expanding the scope to include “civilian infrastructure.”
“One of the first steps toward fully ending the war could be ending strikes on energy and other civilian infrastructure,” Zelensky said in a statement. “I supported this step, and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it.”
However, tensions persist. Overnight, Ukraine launched a drone attack on an oil pumping facility in southern Russia, igniting a massive fire. Russia’s Defense Ministry called the strike a “provocation” aimed at undermining Trump’s peace efforts.
