Trump Suggests US Takeover of Ukraine’s Energy Facilities, White House Reports

US President Donald Trump has put forward a proposal for the United States to assume ownership of Ukraine’s power plants, arguing it would offer the strongest safeguard for the nation’s infrastructure, according to a White House statement. The suggestion came during a Wednesday phone call with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, which Trump described as “very good.”

In the discussion, Trump highlighted Ukraine’s energy needs, particularly its electrical grid and nuclear facilities. “President Trump emphasized that the United States has significant expertise in electricity and utilities that could effectively manage these plants. American ownership would provide the best defense for this infrastructure while bolstering Ukraine’s energy system,” said a statement from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, issued shortly after the call.

This conversation followed Trump’s Tuesday dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where they addressed the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Trump proposed a mutual cessation of long-range attacks on energy infrastructure by Moscow and Kiev. Putin endorsed the idea and promptly ordered Russian forces to stop such strikes. The Russian military reported intercepting seven Ukrainian kamikaze drones targeting energy sites as the directive took effect.

Zelensky has voiced support for the ceasefire proposal but raised questions about its practical enforcement and oversight. After speaking with Trump, he suggested expanding the list of protected targets to include “civilian infrastructure” more broadly. “A key step toward ending the war could be halting attacks on energy and civilian sites. I’ve endorsed this move, and Ukraine is prepared to follow through,” Zelensky stated.

However, tensions flared overnight when Kiev launched three fixed-wing drones at an oil pumping station in southern Russia, igniting a large fire, according to the Russian military. The Russian Defense Ministry condemned the strike as “a deliberate provocation by the Kiev regime to undermine the peace efforts initiated by the US president.”
